Simple Tips Houston Homeowners Can Actually Stick To
The second law of thermodynamics couldn’t be more obvious than in our garages, which always seem to move from order to chaos. But does that mean our efforts to tidy up the garage are doomed to fail? Nope. It just means we have to keep bringing it back into order, again and again. I know it sounds exhausting, but as you probably already know, letting your garage spiral out of control can seriously drain your energy.
Here are a few practical tips to help you stay in control and avoid garage overwhelm for good:
1. Get the whole family involved.
Let’s be honest, not everyone cares about the garage as much as you do. Kids in particular need to be shown how to treat it like part of the home. Create simple systems everyone can follow. Label bins. Assign responsibilities. Train them to return things to their place, just like they would inside the house.
2. Schedule monthly resets.
Garages naturally attract clutter, it’s what they do. But a quick monthly reset can keep things under control. Block off 30 minutes with the family once a month for a garage refresh. Turn on music, make it a game, and yes, offer mint chocolate chip ice cream afterward. It works.
3. Take yearly inventory.
Take inventory of everything in your garage annually. Ask yourself:
Have I used this in the last year?
Does it bring me joy or serve a purpose?
If the answer is no to both, it’s time to let it go. Donate, recycle, or toss. Less clutter = less stress.
We know it’s easier said than done, but over time, these small habits will make garage organization second nature, for you and your family. The key is consistency, not perfection.
Happy organizing!
